Pentatonic Guitar Lesson

Posted in: Rock Guitar Lessons

Today we’re going to take a look at using the pentatonic scale for creating fast passages.

Example one is going to take the first position of Em pentatonic and break it up into fives. Whats very important is to pay close attention to your picking. For each group of five you will pick “down up down up down” and then repeat for the next group of five.
Example two will be played in groups of sixes. This legato exercise will have you striking the first note and then pulling off to the second as you move onto the next string.
Example three is a combination of exercises one and two. Lets switch keys this time to Am pentatonic and start the lick in position four while descending down through positions three and two where we finally end up in position one.
Example four will combine groups of fours, fives and sixes.

Once you have this down, take these examples and apply them to all the positions of the pentatonic scale and incorporate it into your playing.
